Winner Given Chance to Pursue Their Dream with $100,000 Award

MELVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2009) –Nikon Inc. today announced the launch of a new integrated marketing campaign that includes the first ever “Nikon Festival” to celebrate, inspire and harness the current popularity of content creation shared through social media.

As a progressive social media innovator and D-SLR market leader, Nikon is challenging budding filmmakers to upload 140 second short-form video with the theme “A Day through Your Lens” to www.NikonFestival.com and follow @nikonfestival on Twitter for a chance to win up to $100,000 and Nikon equipment to pursue and chronicle their dreams.

Nikon advertising star, Ashton Kutcher, will contribute to the Nikon Festival by sharing his personally shot video taken with the D5000, which captures his recent visit to Africa. The Festival will be supported by a national TV broadcast and online advertising campaign and will run through the end of the year. The Festival video submission period begins November 10 and will be open for entries for a six-week period.

“The Nikon Festival represents the progressive nature of our brand in merging social media with innovative products as a way to engage and empower aspiring photographers and filmmakers,” said Lisa Baxt, Senior Communications Manager for Nikon Inc. "Nikon is committed to advancing HD video with the D5000 and other products and supporting it with an integrated marketing program that has a strong impact and is viral in nature. As part of this campaign, the Festival presents the opportunity for current and future Nikon customers to tell their story with HD video.”

Nikon has also enlisted influencers from TV, photography and social media to serve as official Festival judges. Each will also share personal videos shot with a Nikon D-SLR camera, including actor/writer Rainn Wilson, Internet personality Justine Ezarik (iJustine), and visionary photographer Chase Jarvis. The Nikon Festival entries will be judged in December and winners will be announced in January.

“As an actor and avid writer, I applaud Nikon’s creation of this Festival to advance the accessibility of thought-sharing and self expression to aspiring filmmakers and photographers,” said Rainn Wilson. “I think this is a unique way for people to initiate dialogue on topics they care about, while gaining exposure for their work. I’m excited to check out the videos people submit and will be tweeting throughout the Festival.”

Upload “A Day through Your Lens” Video As guided by the video submissions of Ashton Kutcher and Festival judges, entrants are challenged to create videos in 140 seconds or less, capturing the essence of a day in their life, whether funny, profound or inspirational. As videos are uploaded, they can be automatically shared with entrants’ social networks, including Twitter and Facebook, allowing instantaneous campaigning for views and votes. Although entrants are not required to use a specific camera, judges will be providing direction to meet the criteria of image quality, originality and ability to capture a day through their lens in 140 seconds.

Change Your Life in 140 Seconds or Less Festival entrants will have the opportunity to win one of two awards: an audience award and a judges’ award. The winning video selected by the Festival judges will be awarded $100,000 and Nikon equipment to pursue and chronicle their dreams. Additionally, the video getting the highest average rating and most audience views will be awarded the $25,000 Audience Award and Nikon equipment. Entrants of the Festival, found at www.NikonFestival.com, are encouraged to use social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, to share submissions and gain views and votes. Terms and conditions can be found at www.NikonFestival.com.

NIKON HELPS YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS ACTUALIZE THEIR CREATIVE VISIONS AT BARNSTORM XXII

October 7, 2009

JEFFERSONVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2009) - From October 9-12, Nikon will sponsor 100 of the world’s most promising young photojournalists in upstate New York for the 22nd Eddie Adams Workshop, also known as “Barnstorm.” Renowned and award-winning professional photographers and photo editors will mentor the handpicked selection of students during the intense four-day workshop. To prepare Barnstorm participants for an ever-changing world where multimedia content is becoming more prevalent every day, students will have the opportunity to use Nikon’s professional digital SLR camera system, as well as the new D300s with HD video capabilities.

“Nikon is proud to continue the longstanding tradition of engaging tomorrow’s photographers and photojournalists in a unique educational experience through the Eddie Adams Barnstorm Workshop,” said Bill Pekala, general manager of Nikon Professional Services, and Eddie Adams Workshop board member. “On behalf of Nikon, we are honored for the opportunity to provide this elite group of carefully selected students with access to Nikon's extensive line of high-quality cameras and precision lenses, as well as empower them with a photographic experience the world has come to expect from Nikon.”

To tailor the learning experience to the evolutionary digital industry, participants have access to a state-of-the-art digital photo and multimedia studio with all of the latest technologies. Nikon technical experts will be available onsite to offer advice and guidance. Additionally, Nikon will provide access to professional camera equipment such as the D3, D3X, D700 allowing these students to capture the world around them in stunning detail and clarity. Students will also have access to the Nikon D300s, a D-SLR that allows them to capture both stills and video to adapt to the new multimedia world where content is king.

Following an overwhelmingly positive response the past three years, the multimedia workshop will continue as part of the core curriculum. With many news outlets and other publications expanding their offerings to include interactive slideshows and audio and video content, students receive a crash course in the new media marketplace with access to the top multimedia editors in the country.

Barnstorm participants are the visionary photographers of tomorrow and will benefit from the experience and advice of legendary professional mentors such as Bill Eppridge, Stacy Pearsall and Tim Rasmussen. Other famous photographers available to Barnstorm participants include individuals from well known photojournalism publications such as National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Getty Images and The Associated Press.

During the workshop, the Barnstorm students are divided into 10 teams, with each team paired with a photographer, an editor and a researcher. Each day consists of hands-on activities such as shooting and editing, as well as speeches and panel discussions from industry veterans. Over the course of the workshop, students are exposed to many types of photography including photojournalism, fine art photography, studio portraiture, underwater work, long-term projects, and conflict photography.

In addition to sponsoring the Barnstorm, this is the sixth year that Nikon will award a $10,000 scholarship to the top student from the Barnstorm XXII Workshop. A panel of judges selects a student based on the work he or she presents during the workshop. The scholarship money must be used by the winning student to further his or her education in the photographic arts field, and will be applied towards their tuition and/or housing at the college of his or her attendance.

“Photojournalists and the publications who hire them for their expertise are constantly searching for new and creative ways to reach their audience,” said Alyssa Adams, executive director, Eddie Adams Workshop. “The Eddie Adams Workshop brings together the best photographic talent, while Nikon provides students with the best tools to explore all the new media possibilities.”

About the NIKKOR brand
As the brand name for Nikon lenses, NIKKOR has become synonymous with high-performance, high-quality SLR lenses. The NIKKOR name comes from adding “R”—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at that time—to “Nikko”, the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K. In 1933, the large-format lens for aerial photography was released with the name Aero-Nikkor, making last year the 75th anniversary of the NIKKOR brand.

U.S. PHOTOGRAPHERS AMONG WINNERS OF NIKON PHOTO CONTEST INTERNATIONAL 2008-2009

August 6, 2009

MELVILLE, N.Y. (Aug. 6, 2009) - Nikon Corporation today announced the winners of the Nikon Photo Contest International (NPCI) 2008-2009, including two Americans, Peter Allinson and Danny Ghitis. One of the world's largest and most prestigious photo contests, the Nikon Photo Contest International, held since 1969 and staged every other year, provides an opportunity for photographers around the world to communicate and enrich photographic culture for professionals and amateurs alike. This year’s theme was also Nikon’s brand statement, “At the heart of the image.”

Peter G. Allinson, M.D, of Kingsville, MD, received first place in the “My Planet” category, for his work, entitled "Friends." Entries in the “My Planet” category were judged by how well they expressed the photographer's feelings about their world, whether that involved the environment, scenes from their daily life, or people and other subjects that stirred their passions. Allinson’s photograph raises environmental awareness not by elaborate explanations, but with its unstaged portrayal of nature. It exemplifies photography’s power to convey important messages regardless of generation.

The Nikon Photo Contest International also recognized Danny Ghitis, of Brooklyn, N.Y., (http://dannyghitis.com) as one of four “Emerging Talents.” This award is presented to photographers under the age of 30 whose photographs show a fresh perspective, demonstrate high-level expressive power and convey the energy of youth. The panel chose his work, “Ganges Bather,” for conveying emotive power, fresh subject matter and a youthful perspective that indicates great future potential as a photographer.

The Nikon Photo Contest International 2008-2009 contest received more than 51,000 photographs from 18,000 entrants representing 153 countries and regions. A total of 54 prize winners were selected from among the large number of entries by a panel of 10 international photography professionals. The judges from Nikon’s native Japan were: Mr. Yoshitaka Nakatani, Mr. Kazuyoshi Nomachi, Mr. Kazuyoshi Miyoshi, Ms. Masako Imaoka, Mr. Manabu Miyazaki, Mr. Takashi Yamaguchi, and Ms. Sayaka Ikemoto. An international panel of judges included: Ms. Ami Vitale from the U.S.A., Mr. Alptekin Baloglu from Turkey, and Ms. Claudia Hinterseer from the Netherlands. The full list of winners, along with their works, can be seen on the Nikon Photo Contest International website (http://www.nikon-npci.com/).

NIKON D-MOVIE SCREENING ROOM LAUNCHES WITH ARTISTIC VIDEO FROM FAMED CINEMATOGRAPHER, HARRIS SAVIDES

July 6, 2009

MELVILLE, N.Y. (July 6, 2009) – Nikon Inc. today announces the official launch of the Nikon D-Movie Screening Room (www.nikondmovie.com), an online collection of creative and inspiring videos captured with Nikon’s D90 and D5000 D-SLR cameras. Award-winning director of photography Harris Savides showcases an artistic compilation of life’s most common, anonymous and beautiful moments. Savides, known for his work on Gus Van Sant’s Milk and Ridley Scott’s American Gangster, will be joined in the screening room by other accomplished professionals, as well as aspiring film makers and D-SLR photographers.

Savides created this short film, which reflects his life on the road away from his family, using the Nikon D5000 along with two NIKKOR telephoto lenses, the AF 80-200mm f/2.8D and the AF 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IF.

“Aside from the size, what I like about working with the D5000 is the quality of the image,” said Savides. “I found that this camera creates a special film-like texture unlike a regular movie camera. The image has a finish that has a still photo quality, which for me felt right for this short film – a series of moving stills.”

Savides, a director of photography for more than 25 years, began his career as a photographer in the fashion industry but made the natural transition from still photography to cinematography. In addition to Milk and American Gangster, for which received a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) nomination, Savides has worked with some of the top names in film and entertainment, such as David Fincher and Noah Baumbach.

“As demonstrated by Harris Savides’ short film, the Nikon D-Movie mode can enable anyone from a top cinematographer to a D-SLR photographer to create films that move and inspire,” Lisa Baxt, senior manager, Communications, Nikon Inc. “The Nikon D-Movie Screening Room showcases those who have used the D90 and D5000’s stunning HD-movie capability resulting in exceptional videos whether they are personal moments or artistic visions.”

Additional movies at the Nikon D-Movie Screening Room from both professional film makers as well as D90 and D5000 users will be posted in the coming weeks at www.nikondmovie.com.

NIKON’S HOW TO SERIES, LOOK GOOD IN PICTURES, DEBUTS 30TH EPISODE FEATURING TIMES SQUARE VISITORS

Style Guru Carson Kressley and Nikon Photographers Storm New York for Photo Clinic

MELVILLE, NY (Feb. 4, 2009) – What happens when you combine the universal fear of picture taking, the teeming crowds of Times Square, an uninhibited reality TV star and a seasoned professional photographer? You get the latest installment of Look Good in Pictures: Nikon’s How to Series with Carson Kressley. The fun, interactive site showcases acclaimed Nikon photographers and stylists teaching photogenic tricks that help people look and feel their best whenever they find themselves in front of a camera.

The “Carson’s Time Square Clinic” episode brings shivering tourists and lunch time pedestrians off the streets of New York and in front of a camera for a quick tutorial with Carson Kressley and photographer Steve Simon’s. Viewers can watch as the elated visitors’ mug shots go from dull to dazzling with simple, easy-to-emulate tips.

Although the series gives practical insight for nearly every photographic scenario, Carson Kressley’s advice is universal and practical. Carson’s top tips include:
1. To make your arms look thinner, either place your hands on your hips or hold them slightly away from your upper body. You always want to create shape with your body. Always have some air between your body and your arms.
2. I try to look dressed up because I feel better when I am. That confidence exudes from you – looking cute is feeling cute. I always wear something dark because it’s really slimming. And I always do color around the face. It makes [the photo] pop!
3. Double chin is a phenomena created by two things – a bad pose and a bad camera angle. Position the camera so it's just above your eye level and tilt your head down slightly to reduce the look of a double chin. So instead of dead-on and looking up – moving your head just slightly to the side. It really balances out your face.
4. Use your pictures! The only way to discover your best side is to look at pictures that you love and determine your favorite pose and position. Once you find your “best side,” don’t be afraid to use it. There is no shame in arranging yourself so your best face is forward.
5. Practice makes perfect! Practice your posing. Tape your favorite photo of yourself to your mirror and try to mimic the pose from that picture each time you are in front of the mirror. There is a reason that celebrities use the same pose in each of their pictures.
6. When you’re getting your photo taken, start giggling out loud. This exercise forces you to have a natural laughing smile.
7. Have fun with it! Act like you want to have your picture made. Even pretending will bring out the more natural smile you’re hoping for in your pictures.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Becky Smith, the series covers topics including online profiles, red carpet insight, vacations, holidays, babies, pregnancy photos and even what to consider when buying a camera for a particular photo moment.

Professionals offering advice include portrait photographer Steve Simon, baby photographer Carrie Sandoval, celebrity photographer Lester Cohen and wedding photographer Susan Stripling. With the White House top of mind, political photographer John Harrington also advises viewers on how to look presidential in photos in the “Secrets from the Campaign Trail” episode. Visitors can also pose their most perplexing picture questions on the “Ask Carson” section of the site.

MELVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2008) – Nikon is pleased to announce a new DVD that guides viewers on advanced creative lighting techniques under the masterful instruction of award-winning National Geographic Traveler photographer Bob Krist and world renowned photojournalist and lighting expert, Joe McNally. Popular Digital Camera Brand Taps Ashton Kutcher for TV, Print & Web Ads

NEW YORK (March 25, 2008) - Hollywood's A-list actor and producer, Ashton Kutcher, is lending his photogenic qualities to Nikon to promote the manufacturer's new COOLPIX Style series cameras. The campaign will debut nationally on March 25th with a television commercial, which precedes the print advertisements and an interactive online component. Nikon selected Kutcher for the campaign to bring brand relevance to a broader and more youthful audience. Taking place in trendy locales such as boutique hotels and upscale shopping destinations, the campaign highlights the exquisite styling, fashionable colors, simplicity and great performance of Nikon's Style series compact digital cameras.

“Ashton is the perfect choice for this campaign as he embodies both the stylish and fun attributes of Nikon’s COOLPIX Style series cameras," said Lisa Baxt, senior communications manager for Nikon Inc. "Ashton’s collaborative spirit, creativity and approachable personality enhanced our campaign which showcases the great style, sleek colorful design and ease of use of Nikon’s newest COOLPIX Style series cameras.”

"I am thrilled to work with Nikon on this campaign,” said Kutcher. “I think technology today represents so much more than just function – it represents personal style and sophistication. Ashton then notices some surprising pictures when he reviews the photos on his camera's LCD screen. The print campaign, shot by legendary photographer Norman Jean Roy, truly captures the sophisticated yet playful essence of Ashton and the aesthetics of the camera. Following the television and print advertisements, the campaign will come full circle with a uniquely engaging internet component, details of which will be revealed shortly.

NIKON PARTNERS WITH RCRD LBL, HELPS MUSICIANS AND THEIR FANS CONNECT THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

Nikon Joins Inaugural Sponsors for Music Industry Game-Changer RCRD LBL’s Launch

MELVILLE, N.Y. (NOVEMBER 15, 2007) – Nikon (www.nikonusa.com) today announced that it would expand its support of music and music culture by signing on as an inaugural sponsor for RCRD LBL, the first online music label offering free, sponsor-supported MP3s from established and emerging artists and labels across a variety of niches and genres. RCRD LBL, a joint venture between Downtown Records (whose artists include the Cold War Kids and Gnarls Barkley) and Peter Rojas, founder of Engadget, will constantly deliver new and exclusive MP3s from both well-known and upcoming artists in an effort to connect today’s artists with existing and new listeners.

As a sponsor, Nikon will offer a custom designed photo widget on RCRD LBL’s pages, allowing visitors of the Web site to view images taken of, and by, their favorite artists and musicians. Images displayed in the photo widget will be updated constantly, often by musicians who want to share their experiences from the road while on tour. Combined with blog posts from the artists and RCRD LBL staff, the Nikon photo widget will help build an interactive, multi-layered fan experience that will establish a deeper connection between musicians and their fans.

Visitors will also be able to customize their experience with Nikon’s photo widget based on their interests and selections. The widget will be “portable,” enabling users to embed it into their blog as well as some social network profiles and desktop applications.

“Nikon’s partnership with RCRD LBL is a true extension of our commitment to the synergies between music and photography. The opportunity to collaborate with Peter Rojas and Downtown Records as inaugural sponsors of RCRD LBL is an exciting one, and we know that thousands of passionate music fans are utilizing the Web to find a way to better connect with artists they love. We see RCRD LBL as an incredibly powerful way to do so – through photography,” said Lisa Baxt, senior communications manager at Nikon Inc.

Peter Rojas, RCRD LBL's CEO, stated, "We're extremely excited about Nikon sponsoring the photography experience on RCRD LBL. It's no accident that we approached them as a launch partner for RCRD LBL -- Nikon is a brand that understands how important music is to people's lives and how critical it is to find new models for supporting artists."

Nikon’s sponsorship of RCRD LBL is the latest example of the company’s use of the Internet to connect fans and musicians through digital photography. In 2007, Nikon launched Nikon Live (http://www.nikonlive.com), a new multi-media program that connects a dynamic website with local market events to enhance the live music experience. Nikon Live features photos and other live event content from the Rock and Roll Picture Show, The John Mayer Summer Tour Photo Blog, and photography by world-class Visions of Rock musicians including Mick Fleetwood, Perry Farrell, Graham Nash, Melissa Auf de Maur and Lenny Kravitz.

NIKON LEADS WIRELESS DIGITAL CAMERA TECHNOLOGY

Analyst Firm Publishes Authoritative Document Citing Nikon’s Wireless Solutions as an Edge in a Digital Imaging World Without Wires

Nikon announced today key findings from IDC, a leading technology analyst, resulting from their white paper titled "The Evolution of Wireless Photography i " concluding: Nikon has been on the forefront of embracing wireless photography. Since the introduction of its first wireless cameras in 2005 to the current COOLPIX S51c digital camera, Nikon has been the worldwide leader in regards to Wi-Fi integration and innovative ways to share memories such as the new my Picturetown, Nikon’s new photo sharing and storage service. Results are based on IDC’s ongoing research on wireless connectivity, digital camera market research and a consumer survey on the adoption of wireless digital cameras and their propensity to embrace the capability in future camera purchases.

With each new digital camera generation, Nikon continues to streamline the photo-sharing process through wireless technology, making it easier than ever to share and send pictures without the confines of wires and cables or even computers! The new white paper from IDC states “To date, Nikon is the only digital camera manufacturer to consistently and fully embrace wireless photography. IDC predicts that other top vendors will seek to catch up and embrace wireless photography as well, spurring industry-wide adoption.”

“As the speed and dependability of wireless networks grow, image quality and ease-of-use in digital cameras continue to build. Nikon’s aim is to give the pioneers and the participants of the new web 2.0 an easy way to share not only their photos, but also their lives,” says Bill Giordano, General Manager of Marketing, COOLPIX for Nikon Inc. “Wireless features have advanced significantly since 2005, with changes that consumers can now embrace and easily understand, especially with the recent introduction of the COOLPIX S51c and my Picturetown.”

So how important is the ability to share? The white paper states that 60 percent of respondents cite that they would be somewhat or much more likely to consider one camera over another should it include wireless connectivity. What’s more, respondents said that they would be willing to pay up to $86 more for a camera with this ability.

Nikon continues to enhance this technology to be user friendly and effective based on the needs of consumers. The IDC survey states that 43 percent of U.S. digital camera owners recognized that wireless connectivity is an important feature in choosing a digital camera, and with good reason. Nikon’s wireless COOLPIX S51c camera allows the user to share the photos and movie clips anywhere there is an open access Wi-Fi hotspot. At home, in the office, in a coffee house, airport, a user can simply press a button and have photos sent to email addresses, published to Web sites, or posted on photo sharing communities such as Flickr or Nikon’s own my Picturetown. Business professionals working in the field, such as real estate and building contractors, can utilize Wi-Fi to send pictures directly to prospective buyers or business partners, quicker and easier than connecting the camera and downloading pictures to a computer before sending the image.

Additionally, Nikon engineers digital cameras to enhance not only image quality, but also the “photo-sharing experience” by partnering with service providers T-Mobile®, allowing the user to send images and videos to my Picturetown from over 8,200 T-Mobile® HotSpots® nationwide* and Flickr®, one of the world’s leading photo sharing communities, to provide consumers with more sharing and viewing options. IDC believes “Nikon's courage in opening its technology is critical for wireless photography to be fully embraced by consumers, and positions the firm well in future consumer mindsets as the manufacturer that helps, rather than hinders, product usage.”

NIKON HELPS YOUNG PHOTOJOURNALISTS SHARE THEIR VISION WITH THE WORLD AT BARNSTORM XX

Nikon Supports 100 of the World’s Most Promising Young Photojournalists Through its Sponsorship of the 20th Annual Eddie Adams Workshop

Jeffersonville, NY (October 4, 2007) – From October 5-8, Nikon will sponsor 100 of the worlds most promising young photojournalists who will gather in rural upstate New York for the 20th annual Eddie Adams workshop, also known as “Barnstorm”. These handpicked students will be mentored by seasoned professional photographers and photo editors during the four-day intense workshop. They will learn the skills needed to perfect the art of telling a compelling story with photography and leave with lifelong friends and an unforgettable experience. Students will also have the opportunity to try out Nikon’s new D3 and D300 professional digital SLR cameras and get technical advice from Nikon experts available on-site.

“Nikon has been a proud sponsor of the Eddie Adams Workshop since its inception 20 years ago. This year is a tremendous milestone for the workshop and a true testament to Eddie’s vision for creating an education program that helps promising young photographers become award-winning photojournalists. Nikon is thrilled to play a part in the professional development of these promising photographers,” said Bill Pekala, general manager of Nikon Professional Services, and Eddie Adams Workshop board member. “We are happy to provide attending students with the latest Nikon gear and photo equipment so they are familiar with the latest technologies in digital imaging.”

To prepare for a rapidly changing industry, participants have access to a modern digital photo and multimedia studio with all of the latest technologies to aid these young photographers in learning their craft. Additionally, Nikon will make available the D3 and D300 digital SLR’s allowing these students to be amongst some of the first photographers in the world to shoot with these new cameras. These cameras are engineered to meet the demanding needs of the professional photographer, and the rigors of field work.

These visionary photographers of tomorrow will benefit from the experience and advice of professional mentors such as John White, Bill Epperidge, and Clay Patrick McBride. Other famous photographers represent the top photojournalism publications such as National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Getty Images and The Associated Press.

During the workshop, the student participants are divided into ten teams, and each team is paired with a photographer, an editor and a researcher. Each day consists of hands-on activities such as shooting and editing, as well as speeches and panel discussions. Over the four days, the students are exposed to many types of photography including photojournalism, fine art photography, studio portraiture, underwater work, long-term projects, and conflict photography.

After an overwhelmingly positive response last year, returning for the twentieth anniversary will be the multimedia workshop. As many newspapers and other publications are looking to expand their offerings to include interactive slideshows and audio, the students get a head start in the new media marketplace by receiving access to the top multimedia editors in the country.

In addition to the event sponsorship, this is the fourth year that Nikon will award a $10,000 scholarship to the top student from the Barnstorm XX Workshop. A panel of judges selects students based on the work that he or she presents during the workshop. The scholarship money must be used by the winning student to further their education in the photographic arts field, and will be applied towards their tuition and/or housing at the college of attendance.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the workshop, the past speeches and presentations from industry greats will be compiled into audio presentations for alumni and visitors to the website. This is an excellent way for today’s young and aspiring photographers to hear the advice of photo greats, such as Carl Mydans, Joe Rosenthal, George Tames, Louie Liotta, and of course, Eddie Adams.

"It's not only about the power of the image but the strength of our community,” said Alyssa Adams, executive director, Eddie Adams Workshop. “For two decades some of the most talented people in our business have come to Barnstorm and inspired a generation of photographers. Their passion in-turn will inspire the next."

About Barnstorm: The Eddie Adams Workshop
The purpose of the Eddie Adams Workshop is to create a forum where the exchange of ideas, techniques, and philosophies can be shared between both established members and newcomers of the profession of picture journalism. The workshop is a tuition-free, invitation-only event. Attendees are portfolio-selected by the Eddie Adams Workshop Board of Directors.

About Ghita
Ghita is the brainchild of Los Angeles based designer, Alexis Phifer, a modest and quiet entrepreneur, but unquestionably one who is blessed with the gift of design. Absorbing every flavor, color, and melody from her far-reaching travels, it is her experiences of all cultures which remain the inspiration behind Ghita's ethereal silhouettes and rich hues. Phifer's designs are complimented by lively color palettes and ultra-luxurious fabrics, making the pieces undeniably suitable for the fashion-forward, young-at-heart, seeking to channel their playful, bold side in the spirit of adventure. Although her dresses maintain a classic sense of elegance, they also pay tribute to a more modern sense of design, with art-deco elements like asymmetry, tiered skirts, jumpers, and bubbly hems. Opulent bows, bias cuts, and inconspicuous straps balance out the ultra-feminine bodies. Her exploration of other cultures has given way to the rise of one of the most unique and sought-after independent lines carried in only the finest retailers. While her collections are inspired by her travels, the name itself, which translates to "pearl of the sea", accurately conveys the very mood of every whimsical dress in the collection.

About Mark Seliger
Mark Seliger's professional roster includes numerous music videos, commercials and projects with artists ranging from Lenny Kravitz to Mick Jagger and companies from Universal Pictures to Sony Music. His current work includes projects with Conde Nast's GQ and Vanity Fair as well as his role as chief photographer for Rolling Stone for the last decade. NIKON'S NEW DIGITAL LEARNING CENTER ON FLICKR PROVIDES A FIRST OF ITS KIND -- INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE THAT ASSISTS EVERYDAY PEOPLE IN TAKING BETTER PHOTOS

Partnership delivers educational resource featuring Nikon sponsored professional photographers

MELVILLE, N.Y. (August 22, 2007) - Nikon, known for its dedication to helping everyday people take better pictures, continues to raise the bar with the launch of the Nikon Digital Learning Center on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/Nikon). Complementing an interactive educational site on Nikon's USA Web site, the launch of this new program on Flickr is revolutionary for a camera manufacturer. As an extension of Nikon School, this online resource provides Flickr members with tutorials, practical photography tips and advice from Nikon photo professionals to assist them in taking the photos they've always dreamed of capturing.

In addition, Nikon's targeted sponsorship program on Flickr helps connect avid photographers with others who share their interests and/or use the same camera via Nikon-sponsored Groups on Flickr. The Nikon D50 and D80 digital SLRs rank among the most popular cameras in the Flickr community, and over 50,000 Nikon enthusiasts worldwide are already active participants in the many Nikon Groups on Flickr.

Different from other photo education sites, Nikon's Digital Learning Center on Flickr offers live interaction with Nikon sponsored pros - including Rosanne Pennella, Cliff Mautner, and Nikon School instructors Reed Hoffman and Bill Durrence - who post images, interact with the community, explain the techniques used to achieve their end result, provide tips, and answer questions for those looking to improve their photography skills or just interact with other passionate Nikon photographers. The Nikon Digital Learning Center also includes information about understanding aperture, shutter speed, and composition, to specific genres like action, close-up, travel, landscapes, and portraits.

"This is a unique experience for both professional and leisure photographers to interact with and learn from the Nikon pros to increase their photography skills," said Anna Marie Bakker, director of communications at Nikon. "Not only does it provide our customers with an interactive learning experience that will help them take better, sharper pictures, but it's also available to anyone who is interested in photography. We are proud to further our partnership with Flickr by offering its members and anyone interested in photography, the chance to take great pictures."

"It's great to see the momentum that this innovative advertising program has already gained over a short period of time, as a result of providing useful community tools and information for Nikon photographers on Flickr," said Kakul Srivastava, director of product management at Flickr. "The Nikon Digital Learning Center and the many official Nikon Groups on Flickr highlight one of the things that Flickr does best -“ connecting people with shared photography interests to help them learn and grow from each other's experience."

The Nikon Digital Learning Center is the latest way Nikon is fulfilling its mission to provide the best quality products and support to all levels of photographic experience and provide new and innovative ways of bringing photography to consumers.

NIKON SPONSORS 19th ANNUAL BARNSTORM: THE EDDIE ADAMS WORKSHOP

100 Students and 100 Photojournalists continue the legacy of the late Eddie Adams through education.

MELVILLE, N.Y., October 6, 2006 - From Friday, October 6th to Monday, October 9th, Nikon will provide 100 hand-picked student photographers with the opportunity to trade tips, techniques and ideas with seasoned photography professionals. This four-day event, Barnstorm: The Eddie Adams Workshop, has been engaging the youth community through photography since 1988.

"By supporting this workshop, we have the opportunity to educate and enrich the lives of future photojournalists," said Anna Marie Bakker, director of Communications, Nikon Inc. "This workshop is the perfect way to commemorate the life of Eddie Adams and the contributions that he made to the field of photojournalism."

This exclusive workshop will provide a forum for photojournalists to interact with the budding professionals of their field through hands-on activities and panel discussions. The faculty represents organizations such as Time, National Geographic, Parade, The New York Times, People, Sports Illustrated, Reuters, Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post and others. Since its creation, the event has drawn the participation of many great photographers including Eddie Adams, Harry Benson, Eric Draper, Bill Eppridge, Tom Franklin, Walter Iooss, David Kennerly, Douglas Kirkland, Heinz Kluetmeier, Mary Ellen Mark, Joe McNally, Carl Mydans, Gordon Parks, Joe Rosenthal and Nick Ut.

During the workshop, the student participants are divided into ten teams. All teams are paired with a photographer, an editor and a researcher, all working pros within the field of photojournalism. Each day consists of hands-on activities such as shooting and editing, as well as speeches and panel discussions. Over the four days, the students are exposed to many types of photography including photojournalism, fine art photography, studio portraiture, underwater work, long-term projects, and conflict photography. The highlight of the workshop is the "11:30 Club" during which students participate in one-on-one meetings with editors to discuss and evaluate their portfolios.

Last year, 2005, was the first year The Eddie Adams Workshop had an official Multimedia team, where 10 of the students had the opportunity to go into the field and record audio along with their still images. Due to the success of that trial, and interest from the team faculty, this year, the multimedia aspect of the workshop is greatly expanding, offering each of the ten teams the opportunity to work with a Multimedia Producer. Brian Storm of MediaStorm is heading the Multimedia Team, assisted by Tom Kennedy of the Washington Post and Newsweek Interactive and Rich Beckman from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The 10 Multimedia producers come from a variety of the leading multimedia production publications/centers in the country, including MSNBC, washingtonpost.com, Detroit Free Press, and MediaStorm.

Since the workshop's inception in 1988, Nikon has assumed a large role in sponsoring the event by providing technical support and equipment and sending professionals to teach and lecture. Each year, several Nikon executives offer their expertise in panel discussions and members of Nikon's Professional Services are on hand to provide technical support.

In addition to the event sponsorship, this is the third year that Nikon will award a $10,000 scholarship to the top student from the Barnstorm Workshop. The student will be selected by a panel of judges based on the work that he or she presents during the workshop. The scholarship money must be used by the winning student to further their education in the photographic arts field, and will be applied towards their tuition and/or housing at the college of attendance.

"Next year, The Eddie Adams Workshop turns 20 years old (or 20 years young as Eddie Adams would have said). Nikon has been an integral part of the Workshop, supporting the vision of Eddie Adams and the spirit of photojournalism since the inception of the first Workshop in 1988," said Alyssa Adams, Deputy Photo Editor, TV Guide."Together, over 19 years, we have experienced the first digital revolution in the photo industry and through our shared collaboration are ready to embrace the next."

"NikonNet is pleased to honor Tony Sweet this March," says Anna Marie Bakker, Director of Communications at Nikon Inc. "Music and photography are very similar -- tone, color and balance are all part of their universal language. Tony's photographs have such grace and elegance; it is evident that music is a major inspiration to him."

Tony's striking images are based on one guiding principle: "Every single thing in the picture space either helps or hurts the image; there's nothing neutral." He believes that photographers turn imagined images into pictures -- seeing things first in their mind and bringing them to existence by hitting the shutter. "When you're playing music, when you're really in the moment, you're reacting instantly and totally to what's going on," he says. "You're almost pre-hearing where someone is going, and you're there. You can't be thinking about technique; the moment you think about it, it's too late. It's the same thing in photography. The only way to achieve what you want in photography is to master your craft and then just forget about it. You shouldn't be thinking of how to get what you want; you're just out there doing it."

Tony believes the ideal is to photograph without thinking about technique. While many photographers start out doing a lot of thinking and scanning their surroundings for reference points and scenes they are familiar with, Tony feels that a photographer grows and becomes more spontaneous once they empty their minds and react to what exists around them.

While conducting his workshops and seminars, Tony tells his outdoor and nature photography workshop students that they'll know they're getting better by the number of frames they're hooting -- and the number they're keeping. He feels that the better you are, the fewer frames you shoot.

Tony can chart his own progress by that formula, and by the fact that he's simplified his images and made them ever more elegant and direct. It was a process he didn't have to think about because it was identical to the music process. He also says that the players he most admires are the most lyrical. "What hit me was how clear and direct they were, how simple, in fact. Not in technique, but in their expression and communication."

Tony's gear includes a Nikon F6, for film and a Nikon D2X, for digital. Among his favorite lenses are the 12-24mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S DX, 35-70mm f/2.8D AF and 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkors; the 300mm f/4 ED-IF AF-S Nikkor; the 105mm f/2.8D AF and 200mm f/4D ED-IF AF Micro-Nikkors; and an old favorite, the 85mm f/2.8 PC Micro-Nikkor. A recent addition to his lineup is Nikon's R1C1 wireless close-up Speedlight system. NikonNet and 'Legends Behind the Lens' Honor David Alan Harvey This February

MELVILLE, N.Y., Feb. 1 -- David Alan Harvey really knows how to tell a good story - through photography, that is. Not only can he compose a story through his pictures, but he also has the ability to photograph his subjects without them ever being affected by his presence. This February, NikonNet will pay tribute to David Alan Harvey and his work in its inspiring monthly showcase, "Legends Behind the Lens."

For over 30 years, Harvey's photographs have brought us as close to the reality of situations as we are likely to get. With a graduate degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, he went to work for the Topeka [Kansas] Capitol Journal. He eventually became a staff photographer for National Geographic and was named Magazine Photographer of the Year in 1978 by the National Press Photographer's Association. In 1986 he left the Geographic's staff to become a freelancer. He joined the Magnum photo agency in 1993. Harvey is a frequent contributor to National Geographic and has shot more than 30 stories for them over the years on subjects as diverse as French teenagers, the Berlin Wall and Mayan culture. His photographs have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times and Sports Illustrated. His books include The Mysterious Mayas, America's Atlantic Isles, Cuba and Divided Soul, an acclaimed collection of images of Hispanic life and culture.

The element which makes Harvey's work so intriguing is his ability to connect photographs and turn them into a visual story. He is constantly drawn to the long-form narrative story. "Sometimes I think, hey, I'm not going to think 'story' any more, but then I just somehow can't help myself," Harvey comments. "I tend to get involved in a narrative, whether it's Cuba or hip hop or a project I'm doing on portraits of women. It's something I instinctively feel like doing. I tend to tie pictures together."

Not only does Harvey have the unique talent of linking pictures together, he also possesses the ability to blend in with each and every crowd. As seen through his photographs, Harvey's edge is that he can, as he says, "hang out with both the Harley Davidson crowd and IBM executives, all in the same day." Harvey is often accepted and respected by all groups of people in all areas of life. "You've got to like meeting and hanging out with a lot of different kinds of people," he explains, "and I think that comes from my background. The way I look at the world is that people are not really very different from each other. I key in on the commonalities, and I genuinely enjoy getting to know people from all over the world. It's not hard for me personally to get involved in their lives."

"David Alan Harvey has a unique approach to photography and NikonNet is pleased to honor him this February," states Anna Marie Bakker, Director of Communications at Nikon Inc. "His ability to transcend barriers and merge into the environment of his subjects makes his work honest and distinct. He is, indeed, a rare talent."

People react to David, not the camera he carries. He does not stand on the sidelines. Instead, he becomes an integral part of his surroundings. It is this ability to merge and interact which has earned him the respect not only of fellow photographers, but from those who have had the honor of being his subjects. NikonNet and 'Legends Behind the Lens' Pay Tribute to Joel Sartore This January

MELVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 4 -- In order to make a change, one must shed light on the issue at hand. This is the method used by Joel Sartore in his environmental photography. His work has been an influential force in creating awareness about the environment and the importance of protecting our natural surroundings. In celebration of his unique approach and remarkable dedication, NikonNet will honor Joel Sartore for the month of January in its inspiring monthly showcase, "Legends Behind the Lens."

For over 15 years, Sartore has photographed wildlife and the environment for National Geographic and other publications. Convincing people that there is a tangible, measurable and practical benefit to preserving the land and its inhabitants is, Sartore believes, the key to saving the wild places and the species that live there. Sartore realizes that a hopeful message is vital.

"You can't get anyone to want to change the earth for the better if you're negative," he explains. Sartore remembers hearing a powerful piece of advice from the former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani: "One of the things he said was that no one will do anything, take any action, if all you're telling them is that things are bad and there's no hope. If you're trying to lead, you have to find a positive message. That opened my eyes. People want to have reasons for hope. Hope is what motivates them." Sartore believes that change will come, but it is going to take time. "A camera is a great way to give a voice to the voiceless," Sartore remarks. "It's a way of showing people what's at stake."

Sartore did not set out to be an environmental photographer or, for that matter, work for National Geographic, for whom he is a contributing photographer. His degree from the University of Nebraska is in journalism, and he was a newspaper photographer for several years, handling general assignment work. It was the result of meeting National Geographic photographer James Stanfield that led Joel to send his portfolio to the magazine. At first his work with National Geographic was along the lines of Americana profiles. He worked his way into nature stories when he saw "the environmental destruction that was going on." In addition to National Geographic, Sartore has been published in Time, Life, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated.

"Joel Sartore has a clear passion for his work," notes Anna Marie Bakker, Director of Communications at Nikon Inc. "He has provided his audience with a unique view of the environment through photography and Nikon is pleased to honor him for the month of January."

The introduction of the Nikon D2X marked Sartore's move to digital. His preferred lenses are the 12-24mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S DX, 28-70mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S and 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkors, and the 400mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S II Nikkor. Nikon Battery Recall Notice

Nikon Inc. is asking your cooperation in connection with a voluntary recall of certain lot numbers of its Nikon Model EN-EL3 rechargeable lithium ion battery packs. The battery pack can experience a short circuit causing it to overheat and possibly melt, posing a potential hazard to consumers. There have only been four confirmed reports of incidents of the problem worldwide, and while no injuries have taken place, Nikon Inc. has initiated this recall of the affected lot numbers as a reflection of its commitment to safety and product quality. We are asking that owners of the affected battery packs return them to Nikon Inc. for a free replacement.

The Nikon EN-EL3 battery pack is provided as a supplied accessory with the purchase of Nikon's digital SLR D100, D70, and D50 cameras. It is also sold separately at retail under Nikon's model number 26265. The EN-EL3 battery pack involved in this recall was first distributed by Nikon in May 2004 and is still being sold at retail.

This voluntary recall is limited only to those units of the Model EN-EL3 bearing the following lot numbers:

NikonNet and 'Legends Behind the Lens' Honor Al Satterwhite This November

MELVILLE, N.Y., Nov. 17 -- In the field of advertising photography, it is widely known that photographers must adapt to the changing times. Al Satterwhite chooses to make adjustments while staying true to his own vision through his sense of composition and bold use of color. It is for this reason that NikonNet's inspiring monthly showcase, "Legends Behind the Lens" will honor his work this November. Satterwhite is an esteemed advertising photographer who works with both still photography and film.

Satterwhite has had a busy career. While still in high school he shot for the St Petersburg Times, then moved on to ten years of freelance magazine work, shooting assignments for Fortune, Car & Driver, Life, Time, Newsweek, People, Sports Illustrated and Travel & Leisure, among other top magazines. In 1980, he began a 15-year run of national and international advertising photography. His clients included American Express, Kodak, Porsche, Saab, Coca Cola and Nikon. He also found time to lecture, conduct workshops, work on book projects, including A Day in the Life of Spain, Lights! Camera! Advertising! and Satterwhite on Color & Design.

"Al Satterwhite is a unique talent in the world of both still photography and film," notes Anna Marie Bakker, director of Communications for Nikon Inc. "His work is creative, inspiring and irreplaceable. NikonNet is pleased to honor Al Satterwhite for his distinguished work and accomplishments."

Currently, Satterwhite is doing both still and film work. Film, he says, provides him with a new appreciation for still photography. "Film is about images serving a story, telling the story; it's not necessarily about the image itself," states Satterwhite. "But with stills it's usually the other way around. You usually have one picture, and you have to get the story crammed into that one picture, and it has to stand out. So it's all about the technique you use for that one picture."

It is this thought that brings him back to the thoughts of styles, trends and the nature of commercial photography. Regarding his work, Satterwhite comments, "Basically I like what I do, and I've pretty much kept on doing it. With advertising photography you can go out of style, and later you get rediscovered and people go, oh, it's new and exciting. Well, it's the same vision I've had for a long time with maybe a little twist."

Today, Satterwhite's tools for composites are likely to include a D2X digital SLR camera, an F5 film SLR camera, and a COOLSCAN 9000 to digitize new and older slides. Among his favorite Nikkor lenses are the 28mm f/1.4D AF, 55mm f/2.8 Micro, 85mm f/1.4D IF AF, 135mm f/2D AF, 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF and the 300mm f/4 ED-IF AF-S. He also uses SB-800 and SB-26 Speedlights. To learn more about Al Satterwhite, visit NikonNet's "Legends Behind the Lens" series at http://www.nikonnet.com/legends.

Gabrielle Reece Supports the Nikon Coolpix Pride and Joy Baby Photo Contest as an Ambassador for Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct. 25 -- Motherhood offers even super-model moms the opportunity to step behind the camera to capture images of their beautiful babies. For Gabrielle Reece, who knows plenty about being in front of the camera through her athletic, modeling and fitness careers, being a full time mom has quickly become her favorite assignment. With her interest in children and family, Gabby has joined with the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation as an ambassador to the third annual Nikon Coolpix Pride and Joy Baby Photo Contest. With Gabby's help, the program will aim to drive awareness and support to Starlight Starbright as each and every entry submitted to the contest will directly contribute to the charity.

"Gabby is the perfect spokesperson for this program because as a public personality, she knows a thing or two about being in front of the camera," said Lisa Baxt Communications Manager, Nikon Inc. "And as a mom, she adores her own 'pride and joy' and spends plenty of time behind the camera capturing meaningful memories."

"I have made my career in athletics, fitness and wellness but I have to say that one of my most challenging, and certainly rewarding endeavors is motherhood. I love being a mother and working with Starlight and Nikon on this program is a great way to support a worthy cause and have some fun working with babies and their families," said Gabrielle Reece.

Gabby will be making an in-store appearance in support of the program at the Best Buy Porter Ranch store in Los Angeles on October 29, 2005. She will appear with a number of the children from Starlight Starbright.

To learn how to enter your "pride and joy", please visit http://www.prideandjoybaby.com for an online entry form and submissions. All baby photo entries must be submitted and received by December 31, 2005 for consideration.

Pep Bonet Announced as Winner of 26th Annual W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography

Annual grant for humanistic photography sponsored by Nikon Inc.; Awards ceremony held Oct. 17th at HBO Theatre in New York City

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct. 17 -- The Nikon Spirit Initiative(R) and the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund announced Spanish Photographer Pep Bonet as the winner of the $30,000 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography for his project, "Faith in Chaos." Robin Bowman of Brooklyn, NY, received a $5,000 Fellowship Grant for her project, "Under: Study -- Beneath the Surface of the American Teenager." The grants, which recognize the work of photographers who have established a devotion to documenting the human condition, are presented annually by the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund and sponsored by Nikon Inc. The presentation of awards will be held on Monday, October 17th at the HBO Theatre located in New York City.

"Nikon is honored to sponsor the W. Eugene Smith Grant as part of the Nikon Spirit Initiative," stated Anna Marie Bakker, director of Communications Nikon Inc. "The grant recipients possess remarkable talent in the field of photography. Both Pep Bonet and Robin Bowman bring something new and intriguing to the photographic community. These two recipients have shown incredible skill and dedication through their work."

For the past two years, Mr. Bonet has been taking photographs in post-war Sierra Leone. It is here that he found four groups of children severely affected by war -- amputees, the blind, and the traumatized and former child soldiers. Bonet followed this group of kids and "captured the lives of Sierra Leone youngsters whilst they were creating chances for themselves in a land where opportunities are very rare."

Of his story, Bonet remarks, "It's a story that sheds light on a side of Sierra Leone (and of Africa) that we don't often get to see; one of stamina, pride, and self-confidence I saw how faith enabled people to see perspective in even the most inhumane of circumstances." Bonet followed his subjects closely, his work on this project provides an up-close, and never-before seen view of the direct impacts of war on young people in Sierra Leone and the faith, which gives them strength.

Robin Bowman, the recipient of the fellowship grant, has been interviewing and photographing teenagers all over the United States. She has used photographs and taped interviews to "document the personal history of this generation at the turn of the millennium." The intent of the study is to "help spawn a new dialogue and public awareness of today's youth and allow for a deeper understanding of their lives." Regarding her work, Bowman states, "Most people have a preconceived notion about what it means to be an American. I am hopeful this study will challenge and deconstruct some of these long-held beliefs."

The winning proposals of 2005 were selected from 149 entries representing 33 countries. The jury was headed by William M. Hunt, principal director of New York's Hasted Hunt Gallery, member of the Board of Trustees of the Smith Fund and photography collector; Elisabeth Biondi, Visual Editor of The New Yorker; and Dr. Shahidul Alam, director of the Drik Picture Library and the biannual Chobi Mela Festival of Photography in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

For the past 21 years, Nikon Inc. has attentively supported the W. Eugene Smith Grant. Considered a prestigious honor in photojournalism, the grant was founded in 1978 following the death of W. Eugene Smith, a legendary photo essayist. Smith's friends Howard Chapnick, Jim Hughes and John Morris created the grant, whose goal is to perpetuate Smith's work and spirit. The value of the grant rests in the fact that it provides photojournalists with the opportunity to visualize and achieve goals in photographic studies, all with the benefit of financial freedom.

"Pep Bonet is another talented visionary following in the extraordinary footsteps of Gene Smith. He continues to bring into focus for the public an important part of society we often don't want to see," said Helen Marcus, president of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund.

Nikon Sponsors 18th Annual Barnstorm: The Eddie Adams Workshop

100 Students and 100 Photojournalists to descend upon Jeffersonville, NY to perpetuate the legacy of the late Eddie Adams

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct. 7 -- For 18 years, Barnstorm: The Eddie Adams Workshop has been shaping the future of photojournalism. Beginning Friday, October 7th, and lasting through Monday, October 10th, both experienced photojournalists and newcomers to the profession will exchange ideas, techniques and philosophies with some of the nation's most seasoned professionals. Sponsored by the Nikon Spirit Initiative(R) these students will have the opportunity of a lifetime to attend this one-of-a-kind workshop with their tuition paid by Nikon.

This exclusive four-day workshop will provide a forum for professionals to work directly with the next generation of photojournalists. The faculty represents organizations such as Time, National Geographic, Parade, The New York Times, People, Sports Illustrated, Reuters, Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post and others. Over the years, the event has drawn the participation of many great photographers including, Eddie Adams, Harry Benson, Eric Draper, Bill Eppridge, Tom Franklin, Walter Loos, David Kennerly, Douglas Kirkland, Heinz Kluetmeier, Mary Ellen Mark, Joe McNally, Carl Mydans, Gordon Parks, Joe Rosenthal and Nick Ut.

"We are pleased to continue our support of Barnstorm: The Eddie Adams Workshop as part of the Nikon Spirit Initiative," remarked Anna Marie Bakker, director of Communications, Nikon Inc. "Nikon could think of no better way to commemorate Eddie Adams than to help ensure that future legends arise through this program."

During the workshop, the 100 chosen student participants are divided equally into ten teams. They are then paired with a photographer, an editor and a researcher, all working pros within the field of photojournalism. Each day is divided between shooting, editing, speeches and panel discussions.

Students will also have the opportunity for one-on-one time with editors to discuss their portfolios at what is known as the "11:30 Club". Since the workshop's inception, Nikon has assumed a large role in sponsoring the event sending equipment and professionals to teach, lecture and provide technical support. Each year, several Nikon executives and members of Nikon's Professional Services offer their expertise in panel discussions and are on hand to provide technical support.

In addition to the event sponsorship, this is the second year that Nikon will award a $10,000 scholarship to the top student at the Barnstorm Workshop. The student will be selected by a panel of judges based on the best quality of work presented at the workshop. The scholarship must be used by the winning student to further their education in the photographic arts field, and will be applied towards their tuition and/or housing at the college of attendance.

"We have an outstanding group of faculty and a dynamite support team for Workshop 18," says Alyssa Adams, deputy photo editor at TV Guide and a member of the workshop faculty. "I am thrilled they are all here this year and whole-heartedly supporting Barnstorm: The Eddie Adams Workshop; and the legacy of sharing between seasoned professionals and up-and-coming photojournalists."

While participation in the workshop is highly competitive, the selection process is based solely on the merit of the students' submitted portfolios. The top 100 students chosen to participate are determined by these submissions. Graduates of the workshop are considered among the top young talent in the photojournalism field.

About Barnstorm: The Eddie Adams Workshop

The purpose of the Eddie Adams Workshop is to create a forum where the exchange of ideas, techniques, and philosophies can be shared between both established members and newcomers of the profession of picture journalism. History of Missouri Photo Workshop (MPW)

The roots of the Missouri Photo Workshop are embedded firmly in more than a half-century of rich tradition. Current workshops carry on principles present from the beginning. When the late Clifton C. Edom of the Missouri School of Journalism founded the Missouri Photo Workshop in 1949, he too, looked to the past to map the path for photojournalism's future. Inspired by the gritty, content-rich photographs of the documentary photo unit of the pre-WWII Farm Security Administration, Edom promoted research, observation and timing as the methods to make strong story-telling photographs. FSA director Roy Stryker and photographer Russell Lee worked closely with Edom in the creation of the Workshop and served as faculty members during its early years.

In subsequent years, faculty members have been many of America's leading newspaper and magazine photographers and photo editors; a roster of faculty and students reads like a who's who of photojournalism. Faculty of today includes some of the most energetic, productive and articulate documentary creators currently working. All are experts dedicated to passing on the fundamentals of photo research, shooting and editing to those who hope to carry on these values and techniques into the future. The workshop still follows Cliff Edom's credo -- "Show truth with a camera. Ideally truth is a matter of personal integrity."

Methods

The Workshop focuses on developing skills to produce the visual narrative known as the picture story. Individually strong pictures are still expected, but research, questioning and thinking are stressed. Before photographers begin taking pictures, they must have their story ideas approved by a faculty team. The team expects the photographer to have firm ideas about exactly what the essence of the story is and the visual opportunities that can help to tell that story. The Workshop photographers work closely with their faculty team, conferring with them throughout the day. In the evening of each of the six days of shooting is an open critique -- where the best and worst of the day's shooting are publicly critiqued. The week culminates in a unique and often moving 300-print exhibit where local residents are invited to see what the 40 workshop photographers have been seeing in their community through the lens of their Nikon cameras.

NikonNet and 'Legends Behind the Lens' Honor the Work of Jill Enfield

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct. 3 -- Photographers have long known that a memorable photograph needs to not only capture the essence of the subject in front of the lens, but also the heart and soul of the photographer behind the lens. While Jill Enfield photographs seemingly ordinary objects, her unique style of hand-coloring images presents an art that is all her own. NikonNet's inspiring monthly showcase, "Legends Behind the Lens" honors Jill Enfield during October with a portfolio of her most recognizable art, and a glimpse into the thought and technique behind her hand-crafted masterpieces.

"NikonNet is proud to honor the work of Jill Enfield," said Anna Marie Bakker of Nikon Inc. "Jill's work is unique and has inspired other photographers to experiment with alternative processes."

"Photography is a jumping off point," Enfield remarks. "It's not what I do, or certainly not all that I do. I use photography to do my artwork. I guess it's not so much that I'm just a photographer. I want to make these other pieces, and they start with photography because I don't draw and I don't really paint."

Enfield enjoys the process of creating the image, as much as she values the end result. She comments, "I like to work in the darkroom and I like to work with my hands. I especially like having a lot of choices." The alternative processes and hand-coloring are ways of going beyond the mechanical aspect of photography to put a personal stamp on the work. "I can give an image additional emotional weight," says Enfield. "The colors I use when I hand-color a photograph are not an attempt to recreate what I saw when I took the picture, but rather to depict how the place made me feel when I saw it. The image is my memory of that feeling."

Jill also teaches the alternative processes she uses: cyanotype, kallitype, palladium and Van Dyke Brown. To learn more about Jill Enfield, visit NikonNet's "Legends Behind the Lens" series at http://www.nikonnet.com.
